The First Labour Workshop in Myanmar

On February 16-17, there was a labour workshop in Thukha Funeral Association hall. There were over 150 labour attended and they are from 80 labour unions. In that workshop, they have reported the paper about labour rights and Freedom of association were violated. NLD chairperson U Tin Oo, Ko Ko Kyi from peace and transparent society, Government Official Chief Director of Labour Ministry U Win Shein attended and gave opening speeches. Then Mr. Ross Wilson from ILO Freedom of Association talked about the freedom of association and rights to the labour.

After having all the paper from labour unions, U Thurein Aung took responsible for presentation about Labour Rights. U Saw Kyaw Kyaw Min took responsibility for discussion about Trade Disipute and Daw Eai Shwe Sinn Nyunt took responsibility for discussion about Freedom of Association.

We will report to those discussion result to Hluttaw(Parliament) soon.

Labour activists network organized that workshop and other civil society groups donate money for the cost, U Kyaw Thu and Daw Shwe Zee Kywat supported by supplying their hall, food and accomodation during the workshop. The Speakers are Daw Eai Shwe Sinn Nyunt, U Thurein Aung, U Htay, U Tin Ko Ko Thet and U Nyi Nyi Zaw.

Even now is already one year labour unions were allowed to found, but there are too many problems for basic labour unions, and the labours were fired. So we all labour activists trust we have the responsibility. Our Labour activist network will find out the problems of labours and will try to do report to Hluttaw. For the workshop, we could organized and handled by the donation of civil society groups. So the labours’ organizations and labour represented could talk their problems openly. We will report those result to the Hluttaw in coming week.
